In the central South Island lies the alpine basin known as the Mackenzie Country, named after an early colonial sheep rustler.  This tussock covered landscape was gouged out by ancient glaciers which left rivers and lakes as they retreated at the end of the ice age.  The modern day Tasman Glacier at 27 km in length is one of the longest in the world outside of the Polar Regions.

The snow fed lakes in the area are the most vibrant colours of blue, green and turquoise imaginable due to the glacial “flour” of ground rock particles.  The crowning glory of the area is Aorakei Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain at 3,754 metres.  Although surrounded by other large mountains, the peak of this monolith is unmistakeable.  Further south are the resort towns of Wanaka and Queenstown, where adventure activities of all varieties vie with scenic splendour.  To the south west lies the magical area of Fiordland, with many sunken river valleys and islets dotting the coastline.  The most famous of these is Milford Sound, but lesser known Doubtful Sound is quieter and every bit as spectacular.
